Medication Adherence

HIV medications have transformed a fatal disease into a treatable chronic illness.

medicationHowever, WHP recognizes that it is difficult for many patients to take complicated medications as regularly as they need to. To support them in this process, we developed a medication adherence program led by a nationally recognized HIV specialist pharmacist, Jennifer Cocohoba, PharmD. The program includes the ability to pick-up one’s medications in clinic, already pre-filled into daily dosing packages called medi-sets. For example, a number of WHP patients with intense social challenges pick up their medications from Dr. Cocohoba every week in clinic, a technique called modified directly observed therapy. The program also includes ongoing education about medications, coaching on strategies on how to take them regularly, support groups, and studies of tools to enhance medication adherence.
